| Years ago pioneers came over the Sierra Mountains and down into California's San Joaquin Valley. Forging out into the region they carved canals and reservoirs into the countryside and created a huge expanse of fertile land. This recreated land provided water, rich soil and growth for more than crops and cattle. These same places of openness provided a setting for verdant, creative growth for myself. With friends, and alone, I ventured out into the fields, along canal banks, into ghost towns and growing plots of land. As the soil brought forth life it also brought out my vision. Having this raw material and blank slate to hone my vision and craft, I have now headed into the city to explore the urban terrain. My photos in San Francisco reflect my love and passion for the rural. They do not seem hemmed in, but carry with them a sense of the expanse. These images are not single framed moments, but are reflective of the time and space that flows out beyond the edge of the viewfinder and past the edge of the frame. |
